Join 6/23 #LoveResist public witness - online or in NOLA!
You’ve been hearing a lot about Love Resists, the new push for expanded sanctuary and deep solidarity in our communities. This week, as part of the Unitarian Universalist Association's General Assembly, you can raise up the voices of the resistance in a celebration of partnership and possibility with a distinctly New Orleans tradition at the Love Resists public witness event.
Join this Friday’s #LoveResists: Rejoicing for Sanctuary and Solidarity event online or in person. If you’ll be in New Orleans, join us in person and wear your Standing on the Side of Love shirts.
No matter where you are, you can watch the livestream at Love Resists, portions of the event will be livestreamed on the UUA Facebook page, and tweet with #loveresists.
This public witness event starts on Friday, June 23 at 5 pm Central/ 6 pm Eastern. Featured speakers include Rev. Juanita Ramos of the Congreso de Jornaleros New Orleans, local spoken word artist Mwende “FreeQuency” Katwiwa, Joseph Santos-Lyons, Darcy Roake, Sara Green, and the Young & Talented Brass Band. We’ll also be starting with a "second line" procession, drawing on the tradition established by black New Orleanians to express grief and celebrate life which has offered cultural resistance to systemic oppression for generations. The event will honor the local New Orleans partners involved throughout the week of General Assembly.
If you’re in New Orleans… here’s how to join the event:
Step off with the band at 5:00 pm at the corner of Julia St. and Convention Center Blvd, the north entrance to the Convention Center. And if the second line will be a cross-cultural experience for you, we urge you to attend one of the excellent learning opportunities, trainings and workshops that address racial justice and the New Orleans context beforehand.
Prefer not to roll with the band? You can also go straight to the program location at Mississippi River Heritage Park, just down Convention Center Blvd, to greet the second line as it arrives soon after 5.
Standing on the Side of Love is a sponsor of Love Resists, a joint campaign of the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. Love Resists is inspiring people of faith and conscience to expand sanctuary - sanctuary cities, schools churches and communities - grow solidarity and raise our voices in this justice movement moment. Over 15,000 people signed Love Resists Declaration of Conscience (and it’s not too late to add your name)!
Get ready for a faithful and festive call to action to join the loving resistance we are bringing forward together.
